Product Overview

Philodendron erubescens Red Heart is an indoor climber prized for its heart-shaped leaves with striking red or burgundy tones on new growth and undersides, contrasted with deep green tops. It adds lush, tropical colour and vertical interest when trained to climb or trail, making it a standout feature in indoor plant collections.

Growth:

Grows moderately quickly indoors when provided with good light and humidity. Leaves may reach 20–40 cm long in optimal conditions. It can climb up supports (trellis, moss pole) or trail, typically reaching 90–120 cm in height when managed, though more in ideal settings.

Light Requirements:

Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can burn the foliage. In low light, the red coloration fades and growth slows.

Soil Requirements:

A rich, well-draining mix is best, something loose and airy, with components like peat or coco coir, bark chips, and perlite or pumice. Neutral to slightly acidic pH works well.

Water Requirements:

Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top few centimetres to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot; underwatering may stress the plant and dull colouring.

Humidity and Temperature:

Likes warm indoor temperatures around 18–27 °C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid letting temperatures drop below about 15–16 °C. Humidity above 50% is ideal; higher humidity helps foliage stay vibrant and healthy.

Foliage and Flowering:

Mainly grown for its foliage. Leaves are glossy and heart-shaped, with young growth showing red hues underneath and on new stems. Flowering indoors is rare; the plant may produce deep red spathes in very favourable conditions.

Pot Size and Spacing:

Start in a pot that allows room for root growth — typically 20–25 cm diameter for mature indoor plants. Repot every 1–2 years or when roots become crowded. Provide support for climbing; if trailing, allow space for vines to drape. Ensure good air circulation around the plant.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed regularly during active growth (spring-summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser, every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding during cooler months when growth slows. Organic compost or slow-release fertiliser at potting helps maintain soil nutrients.

Care and Maintenance:

Wipe leaves periodically to remove dust and promote better light absorption. Pinch back tips to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess. Monitor for pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale; treat early. Ensure the soil drains well and don’t let the plant sit in water.
