Product Overview
Philodendron selloum Hope is a lush and tropical indoor favourite in Australia. Its striking, deeply lobed glossy leaves create an impressive statement, bringing vibrant green life to living rooms, offices, or shaded indoor corners. As a compact, self-heading variety, Hope is perfect for those after a bold plant without the fuss of staking or climbing support.
Growth:
Hope grows at a moderate to quick pace, usually reaching around 1.5 metres tall and wide when kept indoors. Its naturally bushy, upright form makes it a gorgeous focal point in any room. Occasional trimming helps maintain its shape if it gets too wide or leggy.
Light Requirements:
This philodendron prefers bright, indirect light but can handle lower light areas too. Just steer clear of harsh direct sunlight, as it can scorch the large, delicate leaves. Ideal spots include areas near an east- or north-facing window where the light is soft and filtered.
Soil Requirements:
Hope thrives in a rich, well-draining potting mix. A blend with peat moss, perlite, and bark works beautifully, ensuring the soil holds some moisture but doesn’t become waterlogged. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0–7.0 for best results.
Water Requirements:
Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch. Always make sure your pot has proper drainage to avoid soggy roots. In summer or warmer months, you may need to water more often, while in winter, cut back to avoid overwatering.
Humidity and Temperature:
Hope enjoys a moderately humid environment, though it can tolerate typical indoor levels. For extra humidity, mist the leaves now and then, pop it on a pebble tray, or place a humidifier nearby. Keep temperatures between 18–27°C, and avoid placing it in cold draughts or near heaters.
Foliage and Flowering:
The main attraction is its spectacular foliage large, glossy, deeply cut green leaves that can span up to a metre long. While flowers (small spathes) might appear on mature plants under perfect conditions, most people grow Hope for its lush, leafy look.
Pot Size and Spacing:
Start off with a pot about 20–25 cm wide, giving the roots space to settle in comfortably. As the plant grows, plan to repot every 1–2 years into a slightly bigger container. If grouping with other plants, allow at least 60 cm between them for healthy airflow.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed your philodendron every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser made for indoor foliage plants. Cut back feeding in autumn and winter when the plant slows down.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove old or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and healthy. Wipe down the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to clear dust and help with photosynthesis. Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites or mealybugs and treat them promptly if they appear. Refresh the potting mix every couple of years to keep the roots happy and the growth strong.
