Product Overview

Philodendron Xanadu is a lush, compact tropical plant prized for its deeply lobed, glossy green foliage and tidy growth habit. Native to Brazil but widely cultivated in Australia, this evergreen perennial brings a vibrant, sculptural presence to indoor spaces. Its dense, fountain-like form makes it ideal for homes and offices across Australia, from tropical Queensland to temperate Sydney, offering a low-maintenance yet striking addition to any interior.

Growth:

Philodendron Xanadu typically reaches 60–120 cm in height and width indoors, forming a bushy, symmetrical clump with multiple stems emerging from the base. Its slow to moderate growth rate and self-heading habit (non-climbing) make it well-suited for indoor containers, maintaining a neat, upright appearance without the need for support. This adaptability allows it to thrive in various Australian indoor environments, from humid coastal areas to drier inland regions.

Light Requirements:

Philodendron Xanadu prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. While it can adapt to lower light, growth may slow, and leaf colour may become less vibrant. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. In Australian homes, placing the plant near a window with filtered light or using sheer curtains can provide optimal lighting conditions.

Soil Requirements:

Use a high-quality, free-draining potting mix that retains some moisture but doesn't stay soggy. A mix containing peat or coir, perlite, and compost is ideal. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Water Requirements:

Water the plant when the top 50–75% of the soil feels dry to the touch. During warmer months or in drier climates, this may mean watering once a week; in cooler or more humid conditions, less frequent watering is needed. Always allow excess water to drain away and avoid letting the plant sit in water.

Humidity and Temperature:

Philodendron Xanadu thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 29°C. It tolerates average indoor humidity levels but benefits from higher humidity, which promotes lush growth. In air-conditioned or heated environments, increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly or placing a humidifier nearby.

Foliage and Flowering:

The plant features deeply lobed, glossy green leaves that can grow up to 40 cm long, creating a dense, tropical appearance. While flowering is rare indoors, when it does occur, the plant produces dark red spathes. However, it's primarily grown for its attractive foliage.

Pot Size and Spacing:

Select a pot that accommodates the plant's root system with room for growth, typically a 20–30 cm diameter pot is suitable for young plants. As the plant matures, repot every 1–2 years to a slightly larger container. Ensure adequate spacing to allow for its bushy growth habit, especially if placing multiple plants in proximity.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed Philodendron Xanadu with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Alternatively, use a liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength monthly. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Care and Maintenance:

Regularly remove dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and health. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better light absorption. Monitor for common pests like mealybugs and spider mites; treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Philodendron Xanadu is generally low-maintenance and resilient, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.
