Product Overview
Ceropegia woodii Variegata Chain of Hearts Variegated is a trailing succulent with heart-shaped leaves patterned in green and silver, bordered by creamy-white margins that can develop soft pink tones. Its fine stems cascade over pot edges, making it suitable for hanging baskets, bright indoor shelves and sheltered outdoor displays.
Growth:
Produces slender, trailing stems that can reach 1–2 m long in favourable conditions. Generally grows more slowly than the plain green form, with small leaves spaced along wiry vines.
Light Requirements:
Prefers bright, indirect light with some gentle morning sun. Good light helps maintain its variegation and compact growth. Protect from harsh afternoon sun, particularly during hot summers.
Soil Requirements:
Requires a freely draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Perlite or pumice can be added to improve drainage. Use pots with drainage holes and avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils.
Water Requirements:
Allow the potting mix to dry between thorough waterings, then drain away any excess. Reduce watering during winter and periods of slow growth. Avoid leaving pots standing in water.
Frost Tolerance:
Frost-sensitive. Grow indoors or in a protected outdoor position, moving containers under cover before cold weather. Avoid cold draughts and prolonged temperatures below 10°C.
Drought Tolerance:
Good drought tolerance once established, with succulent leaves and tubers storing moisture. Container plants still require occasional watering during extended hot, dry conditions.
Flowering Information:
Produces small, lantern-shaped flowers with pinkish-purple tubes and darker purple tips, usually during the warmer months. The flowers sit among the trailing foliage and are relatively subtle.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow approximately 30–40 cm between plants in sheltered, frost-free garden beds. In hanging baskets and elevated pots, provide enough clearance for stems to trail freely.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed lightly with a diluted liquid fertiliser suitable for succulents during spring and summer, following the label directions. Reduce or stop feeding during winter when growth slows.
Care and Maintenance:
Trim stems to maintain the desired length and remove dead or damaged growth. Healthy cuttings can be rooted and returned to the pot for a fuller display. Position the crown in good light and repot when the roots and tubers become crowded.
