Kale Nero di Toscana World Kitchen Seeds
Approx 400 seeds
Bring a taste of Italy to your garden with Kale Nero di Toscana. Also known as Cavolo Nero or Black Cabbage, this heirloom variety has been a staple of traditional Italian country cooking for generations.
Cavolo Nero is loved for its striking dark, wrinkled leaves, which are delicious raw in salads, sautéed with garlic and olive oil, or added to hearty soups such as ribollita. It is also packed with nutrients, providing vitamins A, C and K, along with iron and calcium.
This hardy and easy-to-grow kale thrives in Australian conditions and even benefits from light frosts, which help sweeten its flavour. Harvest leaves young for tenderness, or allow them to mature for stronger texture and richer taste.
How To Grow
Sow seeds thinly, 6mm deep, in rows 45cm apart. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge, usually within 7–10 days. When plants are about 10cm tall, thin to 45cm apart for good air circulation. Cut the crown off at ground level once mature to encourage side shoot growth. Regular harvesting of outer leaves will promote continued production.

Harvest
8–12 weeks from sowing. Pick outer leaves first and leave the centre to keep growing.
Sow
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
