A versatile perennial herb with slender green leaves and a mild onion flavour. Chives are a kitchen essential, perfect for sprinkling over potatoes, eggs, soups and salads. Their attractive purple-pink flowers are also edible, adding both flavour and colour to summer dishes. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, they are equally at home in garden beds, borders, pots or on a sunny windowsill.
How To Grow
Sow seeds thinly in trays or directly into the garden, covering lightly with soil and keeping moist until seedlings appear. Thin or transplant to about 15cm apart once established. Chives will grow well in sun or partial shade and return year after year with little care.
When To Plant
Sow in spring and summer, or year-round in frost-free regions.
Harvest
Cut leaves as required once plants are growing strongly. Harvest flowers in summer for use as edible garnishes.
Soil Type
Thrives in fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Suitable for both gardens and containers.
