Chives are a hardy perennial herb with slender green leaves and attractive pink flowers. They are both useful and decorative, adding a mild onion flavour to salads, soups, potatoes and egg dishes. Compact and easy to grow, chives are perfect for edging garden beds, filling pots, or brightening up a sunny kitchen windowsill.
How To Grow
Sow 15mm deep in groups of 3 to 4 seeds. Once seedlings establish, thin to leave the strongest plant in each position. Space plants about 15cm apart and water regularly during the growing season. Chives will grow in most soils, in either full sun or partial shade. They can also be sown indoors year-round in pots using quality potting mix.
When To Plant
Sow from spring to autumn outdoors, or indoors all year round in pots.
Harvest
Cut leaves as needed throughout the year. Flowers can also be harvested and used as a colourful garnish.
Soil Type
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with added compost or organic matter. Suitable for both garden beds and containers.
