Chives Seed Mats make it simple to grow fresh herbs at home. The seeds are pre-spaced in biodegradable paper, giving even germination and eliminating the need for thinning. Chives add a mild onion flavour that lifts salads, egg dishes, sauces and dips. They are especially delicious stirred into sour cream and served over baked or steamed potatoes.
How To Grow
Fill a 9cm pot with soil mix, leaving about 1.5cm at the top for watering space. Place the mat on the soil, press down lightly, cover with a fine layer of soil and water well. Keep in a warm position at 15–20°C and maintain even moisture. Plants can be grown indoors on a bright windowsill or outside on a patio. Indoors, a north-facing window provides ideal natural light for year-round growth.
When To Plant
Sow from spring through early autumn, or year-round in warmer regions.
Harvest
Cut leaves as required once plants are growing strongly. Regular trimming encourages fresh new shoots.
Soil Type
Grows well in quality potting mix or fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost.
