Product Overview
Chilli Birdseye (Capsicum annuum) is a compact and highly productive chilli variety renowned for its intense heat and vibrant colour. Growing on neat upright plants with lush green foliage, the small pointed chillies mature from glossy green to bright red, creating a striking ornamental display while delivering serious spice in the kitchen. Perfect for pots, raised beds, borders and sunny vegetable gardens, Birdseye thrives in warm conditions and rewards gardeners with heavy crops throughout the season. Its manageable size and continual fruiting make it ideal for both small-space gardens and productive edible patches.
How To Grow:
Plant in rich, well drained soil and water consistently to support healthy growth and steady fruit production. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect roots during warmer weather. Feed regularly once flowering begins.
When To Plant:
Spring through summer once frost risk has passed and soil temperatures have warmed.
Harvest:
Ready in 12-14 weeks. Harvest chillies green for a sharper flavour or fully red for maximum heat and sweetness.
Position:
Full sun in a warm, sheltered location protected from frost and strong winds.
Soil Type:
Free draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or well aged organic matter.
Growing Tips:
Keep soil evenly moist during hot weather and fruiting periods. Frequent harvesting encourages continual flowering and larger harvests. Container-grown plants benefit from regular liquid feeding.
Notes:
Excellent in curries, sauces, soups, stir-fries and spicy marinades. Chillies can also be dried or preserved for long-lasting heat and flavour. Sold as a single seedling from the Howlong Advanced Vegetable Collection.
