Product Overview
Bean Climbing Blue Lake Seeds
25 grams of seed
Climbing Blue Lake is one of the most popular bean varieties, valued for its round, stringless pods and excellent flavour. This tall, heavy-cropping plant produces an abundance of beans that are perfect for steaming, stir-fries or freezing to enjoy later. A hardy annual that is both productive and reliable in the home garden.
How To Grow
Sow seeds 2.5cm deep in damp soil, spacing 10 to 15cm apart in rows 50 to 60cm apart. Avoid watering for a day or two after sowing to prevent rotting. Plant once the risk of frost has passed in a sunny, sheltered position. Apply mulch to keep the roots cool and water regularly during dry weather. Seedlings appear in 7 to 10 days.
This variety can be grown as a pole bean or as a ground bean. For pole beans, support plants with canes, netting or a bean frame. For ground beans, pinch out the growing tips when shoots reach 20 to 30cm to contain growth.
Fertiliser is not needed as beans produce their own nitrogen and help improve soil quality.
When To Plant
Sow in spring and summer. In warmer regions, autumn sowing is also suitable.
Harvest
Pick pods in 10 to 12 weeks. Harvest every 4 to 5 days to encourage continuous cropping.
Soil Type
Grows best in well-cultivated soil with good drainage.
