Product Overview
Australian Native Sturt Pea Seeds
15 Seeds
Swainsona formosa is an iconic native wildflower originating from the deserts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Its striking elongated red flowers with a deep black eye make it one of the most sought-after native blooms. Sturt Peas thrive in frost-free positions with excellent drainage, either in containers or sandy garden beds, and are a standout feature in any native garden.
We recommend the use of Wildflower Seed Starter Granules for improved germination rates and speed, as these provide chemicals normally found in bushfire smoke that stimulate native seed germination.
Plant Height: 1–1.2m
How To Grow
In warm areas sow from late winter to mid-summer. In frost-prone areas, sow only after the danger of frost has passed. Soak seeds in a cup of hot water with a small amount of Wildflower Seed Starter granules. Leave overnight, then drain and sow the swollen seeds. Any seeds that have not swollen can be lightly nicked with a sharp knife opposite the eye, then soaked again until they swell.
Sow 2–3 seeds about 6mm deep into small pots or peat pots filled with moist sandy soil. Keep moist and place in a warm, shaded position to germinate. When seedlings appear, or when the tap root emerges from the base of the pot, transplant to a sunny position. Water in well and continue watering regularly until established, then weekly in dry weather. Use a light application of low-phosphate organic fertiliser and protect young plants from slugs and snails.
