Australian Native Australian Grass Tree Seeds
35 Seeds
The Xanthorrhoea australis, commonly known as the Australian Grass Tree or Balga Grass, is an iconic native plant that develops striking blackened trunks topped with tufts of long, grass-like leaves. These hardy perennials are highly resilient, tolerating drought, fire, cold, and heat—true survivors of the Australian landscape. Once established, they are best left undisturbed, but they can also be raised in containers provided good drainage and a low-nutrient potting mix are used. Their dramatic flower spikes make them a standout feature in any garden, while also attracting pollinators and native wildlife.
Plant Height: 1–1.5m
How To Grow
Sow in warm areas at any time of year, or wait until the danger of frost has passed in cooler climates. Fill 10cm pots with moist sandy soil, wet thoroughly, and firm down. Sow 2–3 seeds flat on the soil surface in each pot, then cover lightly. Water gently and cover pots with clear polythene to retain moisture, removing once germination begins. Place pots in a warm, shaded spot to ensure steady growth. Thin out weaker seedlings and transplant to the garden when around 10cm tall. Water well at planting and continue weekly watering in dry periods for quicker growth. Apply small amounts of low-phosphate, slow-release fertiliser occasionally. For best results, use Wildflower Seed Starter Granules to replicate the smoke cues that naturally trigger germination in Australian natives.
When To Plant
All year round in warm areas, or after frost risk has passed in cooler regions.
