Watermelon Candy Red Seeds produce large, oblong fruits that can grow well over 12kg each. With a light green rind and deep red flesh, this variety is sweet, juicy and refreshing, making it the perfect summer fruit for sharing with family and friends. Watermelons thrive in hot, sunny conditions and need plenty of water to develop their full size and flavour.
How To Grow
Sow seeds 12mm deep directly into the garden. Place 4 to 5 seeds in each clump, later thinning to the two strongest seedlings. Space clumps 40 to 50cm apart, leaving about 100cm between rows. Once plants develop 5 to 6 leaves, pinch out the growing tips to encourage side shoots. Prepare soil with organic matter or fertiliser, water regularly and mulch to help retain moisture.
When To Plant
Best sown in spring and summer when soil is warm.
Harvest
Fruits are generally ready 12 to 14 weeks from sowing. Harvest when the base of the melon turns creamy yellow and the fruit sounds hollow when tapped.
Soil Type
Prefers fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
Important Note
These seeds may be treated with fungicide (Thiram or Apron XL). Do not eat the seeds or feed them to animals. Treatment is an AQIS requirement for certain imported seed varieties and does not affect crops or harm beneficial insects such as bees. If treated, the packet will be clearly marked and the seeds dyed a distinct colour.
