Turnip Early Purple Seeds
1250 Seeds
Early Purple is one of the earliest heirloom turnip varieties, producing distinctive flat roots with purple tops and creamy white undersides. Known for its mild, sweet flavour, this versatile turnip can be enjoyed mashed, roasted, stewed, or sliced raw in salads. The tender green tops are also edible and packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it a dual-purpose crop.
Quick to mature, Early Purple is an ideal ‘catch crop’ for filling space between slower-growing vegetables. It grows year-round in many Australian climates but thrives best in the cooler seasons of spring and autumn. Harvest young for a sweeter flavour and tender texture, or allow roots to mature for cooking.
How to Grow
Sow seeds 1.5 cm deep in well-prepared soil, spacing rows 40 cm apart. Once seedlings appear, thin to 15 cm apart. Keep plants well-watered in dry weather to ensure tender roots. Protect seedlings from frost with cloches or fleece if necessary. Harvest around 6–8 weeks after sowing, when turnips reach a good size.
When to Plant
Summer and autumn for harvests in winter and spring; also suitable for year-round growing in many regions.
Soil Type
Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
Harvest
6–8 weeks from sowing. Lift young for sweet, tender roots or later for larger cooking turnips.
Sow
Summer, Autumn (and year-round in suitable climates).
Important Note
These seeds may be treated with a fungicide (Thiram or Apron XL). Do not eat the seeds or feed them to animals. If treated, the packet will be clearly marked and seeds will be dyed a distinct colour.
