Product Overview
Rhapis excelsa, commonly known as the Lady Palm, is a versatile and attractive palm ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. With its lush, fan-shaped leaves and bamboo-like canes, it adds a touch of elegance to any setting. Native to Asia, this palm is well-suited to a variety of climates and is known for its low-maintenance care requirements.
Growth:
Lady Palms can grow up to 4 metres in height and 2 metres in width, with a slow growth rate. This palm has multiple slender stems and large, glossy green leaves that form a dense, clumping habit. Its fan-shaped leaves have wide segments, creating a lush and tropical appearance.
Light Requirements:
Lady Palms thrive in bright, indirect light but are highly adaptable to low-light conditions. They can tolerate partial shade and are ideal for areas with filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf burn.
Soil Requirements:
This palm prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. A mix of peat, perlite, and sand works well. It can tolerate various soil types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as drainage is adequate to prevent waterlogging.
Water Requirements:
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water the palm when the top inch of soil feels dry. During the growing season, water more frequently, but reduce watering in winter. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so good drainage is essential.
Frost Tolerance:
Rhapis excelsa can tolerate light frosts but prefers temperatures above 10°C. In cooler regions, it should be protected from frost or moved indoors during the winter months.
Drought Tolerance:
Once established, the Lady Palm has moderate drought tolerance. It can survive short periods of dryness but prefers regular watering. Ensure the soil does not dry out completely for extended periods.
Flowering Information:
This palm produces small, inconspicuous flowers, usually in the spring. The flowers are not a prominent feature and may not appear on indoor plants.
Spacing Requirements:
For outdoor planting, space Lady Palms about 1.5-2 metres apart to allow for their mature spread. In containers, choose a pot size that accommodates the root system without crowding.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed the Lady Palm with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). A palm-specific fertiliser that includes essential micronutrients such as magnesium and potassium is ideal. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to leaf tip burn.
Care and Maintenance:
Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or yellowing fronds to keep the plant looking healthy. Avoid pruning green fronds, as this can stress the plant. Repotting is only necessary when the plant becomes root-bound.
