Product Overview
Blechnum gibbum Silver Lady Fern is a compact and attractive fern native to the Pacific Islands. Its lush, feathery fronds and compact size make it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor environments, adding a touch of elegance and greenery.
Growth:
The Silver Lady Fern typically grows up to 1 metre in height and spread. It has a clumping growth habit, with arching fronds that form a rosette around a slender, dark trunk. The bright green fronds have a soft, feathery texture and create a lush, dense foliage display, making it a popular choice for shaded garden beds or as an indoor potted plant.
Light Requirements:
This fern prefers shaded to partially shaded areas and thrives in bright, indirect light. It is best suited for locations where it is protected from direct sunlight, which can scorch its fronds. Indoors, place it near a window with filtered light, and outdoors, it should be grown under tree canopies or in shaded garden beds.
Soil Requirements:
The Silver Lady Fern requires well-draining, humus-rich soil. A mix of garden soil, peat, and perlite works well, as it ensures proper drainage and retains adequate moisture without becoming waterlogged. Slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is preferred. Regularly amending the soil with organic matter can improve its overall structure and fertility.
Water Requirements:
Consistent moisture is essential for the Silver Lady Fern. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season, increase watering frequency, especially in warm and dry conditions. Mist the fronds occasionally or place the plant on a tray of pebbles with water to maintain high humidity levels, which is particularly beneficial for indoor plants.
Frost Tolerance:
This fern is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 10°C. In colder climates, it is best grown indoors or in a protected outdoor location to avoid frost damage. Bring the plant indoors during winter or cover it with a frost cloth if temperatures drop unexpectedly.
Drought Tolerance:
The Silver Lady Fern has low drought tolerance and should not be allowed to dry out completely. Regular watering is crucial to prevent the fronds from browning and drying out. It performs best in consistently moist conditions.
Flowering Information:
Like other ferns, the Silver Lady Fern does not produce flowers. It reproduces via spores, which are found on the undersides of the fronds. Propagation can be challenging, but the plant can also be divided to create new ferns.
Spacing Requirements:
When planting multiple ferns, space them about 60 cm apart to allow for their mature spread and to ensure good air circulation. This helps prevent overcrowding and promotes healthy growth. In containers, choose a pot size that allows for adequate root growth.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed the fern with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser during spring. A diluted liquid fertiliser can be applied monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) to encourage vibrant, healthy fronds. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can lead to leaf burn and nutrient imbalances.
Care and Maintenance:
Minimal pruning is needed—remove any dead or damaged fronds to maintain a neat appearance. Repot every 2-3 years or when the fern becomes root-bound, using fresh potting mix. Regularly mist the plant or place it in a humid environment to support healthy growth.
