Product Overview

Davallia fejeensis, commonly known as the Rabbit's Foot Fern, is an eye-catching fern native to Fiji. It is well-known for its unique, furry rhizomes that resemble rabbit's feet, and its delicate, feathery fronds. This fern is ideal for hanging baskets and containers, both indoors and outdoors, making it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.

Growth:

The Rabbit's Foot Fern typically grows up to 30-60 cm in height and spreads to about 60 cm. It forms a compact, low-growing mound with arching, delicate fronds that emerge from its characteristic fuzzy rhizomes. These rhizomes often spill over the edges of containers, creating a striking visual effect.

Light Requirements:

This fern prefers bright, indirect light but can adapt to lower light conditions. It thrives in areas with filtered sunlight, such as rooms with north or east-facing windows, or shaded garden spots. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can cause the fronds to scorch and turn brown.

Soil Requirements:

The Rabbit's Foot Fern thrives in well-draining, humus-rich soil. A mix of potting soil, peat, and perlite or coarse sand provides the ideal environment. It is important to ensure the soil remains moist but not soggy, as the shallow root system is prone to rot if waterlogged.

Water Requirements:

Water the fern thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Maintain consistent moisture, but avoid overwatering. During the growing season (spring to autumn), regular watering is essential to keep the soil evenly moist. In winter, reduce watering slightly, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. Mist the fronds and rhizomes regularly to maintain high humidity.

Frost Tolerance:

The Rabbit's Foot Fern is not frost-tolerant and should be kept in temperatures above 10°C. In colder climates, it is best grown indoors or in a protected outdoor location to prevent frost damage.

Drought Tolerance:

This fern has low drought tolerance and requires consistent moisture to maintain its lush appearance. It should not be allowed to dry out completely. High humidity is beneficial, so consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier, especially in dry indoor environments.

Flowering Information:

Like other ferns, the Rabbit's Foot Fern does not produce flowers. It reproduces via spores found on the undersides of mature fronds. Propagation is typically done by dividing the rhizomes.

Spacing Requirements:

For best results, space multiple ferns about 30-45 cm apart to allow for their mature spread. This will provide adequate air circulation and prevent overcrowding.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to salt build-up in the soil and damage the delicate fronds. A balanced fertiliser or a specialised fern fertiliser is recommended.

Care and Maintenance:

Minimal pruning is required—remove any dead or damaged fronds to keep the plant looking tidy. Repot the fern every 2-3 years, using fresh potting mix to rejuvenate the plant. Ensure the rhizomes are not buried during repotting, as this can cause them to rot. Regular misting and maintaining high humidity levels are key to keeping this fern healthy.
