Product Overview

Pteris Cretica Albo-Lineata Silver Ribbon Fern is an elegant evergreen fern prized for its slender, arching fronds and distinctive variegated colouring. Each fresh green frond features a broad creamy-white to silver stripe through its centre, creating a bright display in shaded garden areas and indoor spaces. Its compact, clumping habit makes it ideal for pots, ferneries, shaded rockeries, terrariums and sheltered garden beds. Indoors, it adds soft texture and performs well in areas with bright, indirect light and moderate humidity.

Growth:

Silver Ribbon Fern typically grows between 30 and 60 centimetres tall and wide. It gradually forms a compact clump of upright to gently arching fronds.

Light Requirements:

This fern performs best in partial to full shade outdoors or bright, indirect light indoors. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds and fade their distinctive silver markings.

Soil Requirements:

Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Container-grown plants perform well in a quality indoor potting mix that allows excess water to drain freely.

Water Requirements:

Keep the soil consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. Water when the surface begins to feel slightly dry and reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.

Frost Tolerance:

Silver Ribbon Fern is frost-tender and should be protected from cold temperatures and freezing conditions. In frost-prone climates, grow it indoors or move container plants into a warm, sheltered position during winter.

Drought Tolerance:

This fern has poor drought tolerance and should not be allowed to dry out completely. Consistent soil moisture and moderate humidity help prevent brown, dry frond edges.

Flowering Information:

Like all ferns, Silver Ribbon Fern does not produce flowers. Mature plants reproduce through spores that develop on the undersides of the fronds.

Spacing Requirements:

Space plants approximately 30 to 50 centimetres apart to provide room for their mature spread and maintain good air circulation.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Avoid excessive fertilising, as high nutrient or salt levels can damage the delicate roots and cause browning along the fronds.

Care and Maintenance:

Remove old, damaged or discoloured fronds at their base to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Maintain moderate humidity indoors and position the plant away from heaters, air conditioners and drying draughts. Repot when the clump becomes crowded, using a container with adequate drainage.
