Product Overview
Cycas revoluta, commonly known as the Japanese Sago Palm, is a cycad native to Japan that is popular both as an indoor and outdoor ornamental plant. Despite its palm-like appearance, it is not a true palm but belongs to an ancient group of plants that have been around since the time of the dinosaurs.
Growth:
This slow-growing plant can reach up to 2 metres in height with a spread of around 1 metre. It features a thick trunk topped with a crown of glossy, dark-green fronds that radiate out symmetrically.
Light Requirements:
The Sago Palm thrives in bright, indirect light. It can also tolerate partial shade, making it suitable for various indoor and outdoor locations. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight, especially during hot summer months, as it can burn the foliage.
Soil Requirements:
Plant in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A mix designed for cacti or palms works well, especially in containers. If planting in the ground, ensure the soil is slightly acidic to neutral with good drainage to prevent root rot.
Water Requirements:
Water the Sago Palm moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. It has some drought tolerance once established but prefers consistent moisture. During winter, reduce watering as the plant's growth slows down.
Frost Tolerance:
Although the Sago Palm can tolerate short periods of cold, prolonged exposure to frost can damage the foliage. It is best suited to temperate and subtropical climates and should be brought indoors or protected in colder regions.
Drought Tolerance:
The Sago Palm can withstand dry conditions but performs best when provided with regular moisture. Mulching around the base can help maintain soil moisture and keep the roots cool.
Flowering Information:
This plant is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants. It rarely flowers indoors and typically produces large, cone-like structures only after many years of growth.
Spacing Requirements:
When planting outdoors, space Sago Palms about 1 metre apart to allow for their mature spread. In containers, use a deep pot to accommodate the roots and prevent tipping as the plant grows.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Feed the Sago Palm with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and summer to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to yellowing of the leaves.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune only dead or completely brown fronds. Yellow fronds still provide nutrients to the plant and should not be removed prematurely. Be cautious when handling the plant, as all parts are toxic if ingested, and wear gloves to protect your skin.
