Product Overview

Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, commonly known as Bangalow Palm, is a tall, elegant palm native to the rainforests of eastern Australia. It features a slender, smooth grey trunk topped with a dense crown of feathery, arching fronds. This palm is popular for creating a lush, tropical look in gardens and landscapes and is suitable for both residential and commercial use.

Growth:

Typically reaches a height of 10-20 metres with a spread of 2-3 metres. This palm has a fast growth rate under optimal conditions and forms a single, upright trunk with a canopy of pinnate leaves.

Light Requirements:

Thrives in full sun to part shade. It is well-suited for planting in sheltered positions where it can receive ample sunlight and protection from strong winds.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers well-drained, moist, humus-rich soils. It is adaptable to various soil types but requires good drainage to prevent root rot. The addition of organic matter can improve soil quality and support healthy growth.

Water Requirements:

Bangalow Palms require regular watering, especially during the establishment phase. Once established, they are moderately drought-tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture. Avoid letting the root area dry out completely during hot periods.

Frost Tolerance:

It can withstand light frosts but may need some protection in extreme cold.

Drought Tolerance:

Moderate drought tolerance once established. Regular watering during prolonged dry periods will help maintain its lush appearance and support healthy growth.

Flowering Information:

Produces creamy white to lilac flowers in large, pendulous clusters, followed by red fruits that attract birds. The flowers appear in mid-summer, adding seasonal interest to the garden.

Spacing Requirements:

Plant about 2-3 metres apart for a dense, tropical effect or to line driveways and pathways. This spacing allows the palm to develop its full canopy without overcrowding.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and summer to promote vigorous growth and maintain healthy foliage. Regular feeding during the growing season will help enhance the palm’s overall health and appearance.

Care and Maintenance:

This is a relatively low-maintenance palm once established. Prune dead or damaged fronds as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Mulching around the base will help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
