Product Overview
Helleborus Winter Elegance Winter Ruby is a compact evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial prized for its rich ruby-red winter flowers and attractive dark green foliage. Flowering when many other plants are dormant, it brings valuable colour to shaded garden beds, woodland-style plantings, borders and containers through the cooler months.
Growth:
Helleborus Winter Elegance Winter Ruby forms a neat, clumping plant generally growing around 30 to 45cm high and approximately 40 to 50cm wide. Its compact habit makes it well suited to smaller garden spaces and mass planting beneath taller shrubs and trees.
Light Requirements:
Plant in part shade to filtered shade. Morning sun or dappled light is ideal, particularly in warmer climates where protection from harsh afternoon sun will help maintain healthy foliage and flowers.
Soil Requirements:
Winter Ruby prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. A slightly alkaline to neutral soil is generally suitable, provided drainage is good and the root zone does not remain waterlogged.
Water Requirements:
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture through the growing and flowering period. Once established, hellebores are relatively hardy but perform best when the soil is not allowed to dry out completely for extended periods.
Frost Tolerance:
Helleborus Winter Elegance Winter Ruby has excellent frost tolerance and is well suited to cool-climate gardens. Its winter flowering habit makes it especially valuable in areas that experience cold conditions.
Drought Tolerance:
Once established, Winter Ruby can tolerate short dry periods, particularly during cooler weather. Regular watering is beneficial during prolonged hot and dry conditions.
Flowering Information:
Deep ruby-red flowers are produced from winter into early spring, often held above the foliage where they create a striking seasonal display. The blooms are long lasting and provide strong colour during one of the quietest times of the gardening year.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow approximately 40 to 50cm between plants to provide room for mature clumps to develop and maintain good airflow.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in autumn or early spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Compost or well-aged organic matter can also be added around the root zone to improve soil condition.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove old or damaged leaves in late autumn or early winter to improve the appearance of emerging flowers and reduce congestion around the crown. Trim spent flowers after blooming if desired and maintain a layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it clear of the crown.
