Product Overview

Helleborus Winter Elegance Black is a winter-flowering perennial known for its deep, near-black blooms and elegant evergreen foliage. Flowering in the coldest months, this hellebore adds dramatic colour to shaded garden beds when little else is in bloom. Its nodding, cup-shaped flowers and glossy green leaves bring structure and richness to woodland gardens, underplantings, and pots.

Growth:

Forms a compact clump approximately 35–45 cm high and wide. Its dense, leathery foliage provides year-round interest, with flowers rising just above the leaves in mid to late winter.

Light Requirements:

Performs best in part shade to full shade. Ideal beneath deciduous trees, in woodland settings, or on the shady side of buildings.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. It thrives in humus-rich, slightly alkaline to neutral soils and dislikes overly wet or dry conditions.

Water Requirements:

Moderate water needs. Keep soil moist during the growing season and flowering period, but avoid waterlogging. Once established, it can tolerate short dry spells.

Frost Tolerance:

Highly frost-tolerant and well suited to cool-climate gardens. It flowers even during frosty periods, making it a valuable winter feature.

Drought Tolerance:

Moderate drought tolerance once mature, especially in shaded areas with mulch. Prolonged dryness may affect flowering.

Flowering Information:

Produces nodding, cup-shaped flowers in rich black to deep purple tones from mid-winter through early spring. Blooms are long-lasting and often appear while other plants are dormant.

Spacing Requirements:

Space plants 40–50 cm apart to allow for mature clump size and good airflow. Works well mass planted or underplanted beneath trees and shrubs.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed in late autumn or early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or a light application of compost to encourage flowering and fresh foliage growth.

Care and Maintenance:

Remove old or damaged leaves in late autumn to highlight fresh blooms and reduce disease risk. Mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil quality. Once established, avoid disturbing the roots, as hellebores dislike being moved.
