A traditional favourite, Californian Wonder produces large, blocky capsicums with thick, crunchy walls that turn from glossy green to vibrant red as they mature. Sweet and versatile, they’re perfect for stuffing, roasting, grilling, or slicing fresh into salads. Their attractive fruits also add a splash of colour to the garden, making them both decorative and productive.
How To Grow
Sow seeds 6mm deep in trays or punnets filled with quality seed raising mix. Keep in a warm, sunny spot and maintain even moisture until germination. Transplant seedlings into 12cm pots once they are strong enough to handle, then move them to their final position in the garden when around 15cm tall. Space plants 50cm apart in rows, ensuring the soil is enriched with organic matter or compost. Choose a sunny, sheltered position and water regularly during hot, dry weather.
When To Plant
- Cool and temperate zones: Spring to early Summer, after the risk of frost has passed.
- Subtropical and tropical zones: Spring through Summer.
Harvest
Ready to pick around 12–14 weeks after sowing, with fruit colouring from green to red through Summer and Autumn.
