Product Overview
Camellia sasanqua Fukuzutsumi is an elegant evergreen shrub with glossy foliage and delicate bi-coloured flowers that bloom in the cooler months. It makes a refined choice for hedges, screening, garden borders or containers.
Growth:
Matures to about 1.5-2.5 m high and 1.2-2.0 m wide, depending on site and conditions.
Light Requirements:
Grows well in full sun to part shade. Morning sun with some protection from harsh afternoon light gives the best performance.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers a moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavily water-logged or poorly drained beds.
Water Requirements:
Water regularly while establishing. Once settled, maintain moderate moisture especially during dry spells, but avoid soggy soil.
Frost Tolerance:
Tolerant of light to moderate frost; however in very cold or exposed locations flower buds and blooms may be damaged.
Drought Tolerance:
Reasonable tolerance once established; sustained drought will reduce flowering and vitality, so occasional deep watering in dry periods helps.
Flowering Information:
Blooms from autumn into early winter, producing single to semi-double flowers that are white with rose-pink edges. The contrast of the colour against dark foliage lends significant garden impact.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow about 1.2-2 m between plants to give each shrub room to develop its natural form and for airflow.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Low to moderate. A light application of slow-release or native-friendly fertiliser in spring supports growth and flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen which may reduce bloom quality.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove spent blooms and lightly prune after flowering to shape and increase branching. Mulch to conserve moisture and maintain soil quality, keeping mulch clear of the trunk to prevent rot. Provide good airflow to reduce disease risk.
