Sweet basil is a kitchen essential, bringing fresh taste to pasta, pizzas, salads and sauces, and is especially well known as the main ingredient in pesto. Easy to grow in both garden beds and pots, it’s a must-have for every herb garden.
How To Grow
For garden beds, sow seeds in shallow drills and thin seedlings to 30cm apart. For pots or indoor growing, sow 5mm deep in small peat pots to reduce root disturbance. Transplant outdoors from late October into a sunny, sheltered spot. Basil thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from regular harvesting to encourage bushy growth.
When To Plant
Can be sown all year round in pots or windowsill containers, and outdoors during the warmer months.
Harvest
Pick leaves as required throughout the year. Regular harvesting promotes new growth and prolongs the season.
Soil Type
Best grown in rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
