Product Overview

Artichoke Green Globe (Cynara scolymus) is a hardy perennial vegetable that also doubles as an impressive garden feature. It produces large, rounded globes that are deep green with a soft purple tinge, supported by strong, architectural foliage. As the plant matures, it becomes increasingly striking, forming a bold presence in edible gardens or ornamental borders. With the right care it returns each year and offers reliable harvests from late spring through summer. When allowed to bloom, the dramatic flowers attract bees and add height and character to the garden. Best planted in spring for strong establishment.

How To Grow:

Plant in a sunny, well drained position with room for the plant to spread. Water consistently while establishing and mulch to retain moisture. Keep the soil moist but never waterlogged.

When To Plant:

Plant in spring once the risk of frost has passed.

Harvest:

Late spring through summer. Ready in approximately 6 months. Harvest immature globes early for the best flavour, cutting before the buds begin to open.

Position:

Full sun to maximise growth and globe development.

Soil Type:

Free draining soil enriched with compost or well aged organic matter.

Growing Tips:

Allow plenty of space for the plant’s large mature size. Remove spent buds to encourage new shoots. Mulch well to conserve moisture and stabilise soil temperature.

Notes:

Ideal for steaming, grilling or roasting. Decorative flowers attract pollinators when allowed to bloom. Sold as a single seedling from the Howlong Advanced Vegetable Collection.
