Product Overview
Xanthorrhoea johnsonii or Grass Tree is a captivating Australian native plant, celebrated for its sculptural form and extraordinary resilience. With its tufted crown of arching, grass-like leaves atop a singular blackened trunk, this iconic plant is a timeless feature in any landscape, combining natural elegance with ecological value. Grass Trees are uniquely adapted to fire-prone environments. Their blackened trunks are a natural protective feature, and fire often stimulates prolific flowering, creating an awe-inspiring display. These plants make dramatic focal points in rockeries, native gardens, and contemporary landscapes.
Growth:
Grass Trees are remarkably slow-growing, taking decades to reach their full height of up to 5 metres. Their trunks, formed from tightly packed old leaf bases bonded by resin, create a unique textured appearance. The lush crown of slender, green leaves adds a striking, sculptural element to gardens.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to light shade. A bright position ensures healthy growth and highlights its dramatic form.
Soil Requirements:
Adapts well to sandy, gravelly, or well-drained soils. In heavier soils, planting in raised beds or improving drainage is recommended to prevent waterlogging.
Water Requirements:
Once established, this plant is highly drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering. During its establishment phase, regular watering promotes robust root development and growth.
Frost Tolerance:
Grass Trees handle light frosts with ease, making them suitable for temperate climates. Protect young plants in frost-prone areas to avoid damage.
Drought Tolerance:
Renowned for their ability to thrive in dry conditions, Grass Trees are perfectly suited to low-water gardens and arid landscapes.
Flowering Information:
Following fire events or seasonal stress, Grass Trees produce tall, spear-like flower spikes adorned with thousands of tiny, creamy-white blossoms. These nectar-rich flowers attract birds, bees, and insects, adding movement and life to the garden.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow ample space around the plant for its crown to spread gracefully. Plant individual specimens at least 1.5 to 2 metres apart for optimal growth and visibility.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Minimal fertilising is required. A light application of slow-release, low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring supports healthy foliage and root systems.
Care and Maintenance:
Low-maintenance and hardy, Grass Trees require occasional removal of dead leaves to maintain their striking appearance and reduce fire risk. Mulching around the base conserves moisture and improves soil health.
