Product Overview
Miscanthus sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Silver Grass, is an elegant, herbaceous ornamental grass valued for its tall, arching plumes and striking foliage. It is a popular choice for adding texture and movement to garden landscapes, with its feathery flower heads creating a beautiful display from late summer to autumn.
Growth:
Grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 metres and a width of around 1-1.2 metres, forming dense clumps of narrow, arching leaves. The foliage turns from green to a warm straw colour in winter, providing year-round interest.
Light Requirements:
Prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade. It thrives in sunny locations, which help to produce its distinctive, silvery flower heads.
Soil Requirements:
Adapts well to a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate poor soil conditions as long as it is not waterlogged.
Water Requirements:
Moderate water needs. Water regularly during the establishment period and provide additional watering during dry spells. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture.
Frost Tolerance:
Hardy and can tolerate light frosts, making it suitable for various Australian climates. It remains attractive throughout the winter, even when the foliage dies back.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once established. Regular watering during prolonged dry periods will help maintain its lush appearance and healthy growth.
Flowering Information:
Produces feathery, cream-coloured flower heads that rise above the foliage from late summer to autumn. These flowers turn a warm silvery hue as they mature, providing a stunning visual display.
Spacing Requirements:
Plant about 1-1.2 metres apart for mass planting or as a feature plant to allow adequate space for the clumps to expand.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support strong growth and vibrant flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
Care and Maintenance:
A low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention once established. Cut back old foliage and flower stems to ground level in late winter to encourage fresh growth. Miscanthus sinensis is generally free from pests and diseases.
