Product Overview

Sansevieria trifasciata Silver Snake Plant is an evergreen succulent with upright, sword-shaped leaves in silvery-green tones. Its architectural shape adds height and texture to indoor displays, pots and sheltered outdoor plantings. Slow growing and tolerant of dry conditions, it is well suited to low-maintenance spaces.

Growth:

Forms upright clumps, generally reaching approximately 50–90 cm high and 30–50 cm wide. Produces new shoots from underground rhizomes, gradually developing a fuller cluster.

Light Requirements:

Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates lower light levels, where growth will be slower. Gentle morning sun is suitable. Protect from intense afternoon sun and introduce plants gradually to brighter conditions.

Soil Requirements:

Requires a freely draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Perlite or pumice can be added to improve drainage. Use containers with drainage holes and avoid heavy soils that remain wet.

Water Requirements:

Allow the potting mix to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water deeply, then drain away any excess. Reduce watering during winter and in low-light positions. Avoid leaving water sitting between the leaves or in saucers.

Frost Tolerance:

Frost-sensitive. Grow indoors or in a sheltered, frost-free outdoor position. Protect from cold draughts and prolonged temperatures below 10°C, particularly when the soil is damp.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought tolerant once established. Its thick leaves and rhizomes store moisture, allowing it to cope with extended periods between watering.

Flowering Information:

Mature plants occasionally produce slender flower spikes carrying small, fragrant, greenish-white flowers, usually during spring or summer. Flowering is irregular and less common indoors.

Spacing Requirements:

Allow approximately 30–50 cm between plants in sheltered, frost-free garden beds. In containers, provide room for new shoots to develop around the main clump.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed lightly with a diluted fertiliser suitable for succulents during spring and summer, following the label directions. Avoid overfeeding and stop feeding during periods of slow winter growth.

Care and Maintenance:

Wipe leaves occasionally with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust. Remove damaged leaves at the base rather than trimming their tips. Repot when crowded and divide established clumps if required. Keep outdoor plantings contained and dispose of unwanted divisions responsibly.
