Product Overview
Magnolia Grandiflora Super Gem PBR is an evergreen tree with dense, glossy dark green foliage and large, fragrant, creamy-white flowers. Its upright habit provides year-round structure and privacy, making it suitable for screening, avenue planting or use as a feature tree.
Growth:
Moderate growing, typically reaching approximately 6–8 m high and 3–4 m wide, depending on conditions. Develops a dense, upright canopy that can be maintained with light pruning.
Light Requirements:
Grows best in full sun to part shade. Good sunlight encourages flowering and dense foliage. Choose a position sheltered from strong, drying winds, particularly in hot inland areas.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Tolerates a range of soil types provided drainage is adequate. Avoid waterlogged positions and strongly alkaline soils.
Water Requirements:
Water deeply and regularly during establishment. Once established, provide supplementary watering during extended dry periods and extreme heat. Apply mulch over the root zone to retain moisture, keeping it clear of the trunk.
Frost Tolerance:
Tolerates frost once established. Young trees and soft new growth may require protection from severe frost, particularly in exposed positions.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought tolerant once established. Performs best with occasional deep watering during prolonged dry weather, especially in hot inland gardens.
Flowering Information:
Produces large, creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers with a rich, sweet fragrance from late spring through summer. Flowering is generally best in a sunny position with adequate moisture.
Spacing Requirements:
Space approximately 2–3 m apart for a dense screen. Allow around 4 m or more between individual specimens to accommodate their natural canopy spread.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a controlled-release fertiliser suitable for magnolias and other acid-loving plants in spring, following the label directions. Water thoroughly after feeding and avoid fertilising dry or heat-stressed trees.
Care and Maintenance:
Prune lightly after the main flowering period if shaping is required. Remove dead or damaged branches and avoid unnecessary heavy pruning. Maintain an organic mulch layer and avoid digging around the shallow roots. Collect fallen leaves and spent flowers from paths and paved areas as needed.
