Product Overview

Myoporum parvifolium Yareena is a robust Australian native groundcover renowned for its longevity and resilience. This cultivar is particularly favoured for its dense, lush foliage and profusion of star-shaped white flowers, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a hardy yet attractive groundcover solution.

Growth:

Yareena exhibits a prostrate growth habit, typically reaching a height of 10 to 15 centimetres and spreading up to 1 metre in width. Its thick, woody stems contribute to its extended lifespan and provide a sturdy framework for the plant's vibrant green foliage. The leaves are fleshy, glabrous, and arranged alternately along the stems, creating a dense mat that effectively suppresses weeds and stabilises soil.

Light Requirements:

This cultivar thrives in full sun to part shade conditions. While it can tolerate partial shade, optimal flowering and foliage density are achieved with ample sunlight exposure.

Soil Requirements:

Yareena is adaptable to a variety of soil types, from sandy soils to heavy clays. It performs best in well-drained soils and can tolerate mildly saline conditions, making it suitable for coastal gardens. Incorporating organic matter, such as compost, can enhance soil fertility and structure, promoting vigorous growth.

Water Requirements:

Once established, Yareena demonstrates excellent drought tolerance, requiring minimal supplemental watering. During the establishment phase, typically the first 8 to 13 weeks post-planting, regular watering is essential to promote deep root development. In prolonged dry periods, occasional deep watering will support sustained health and flowering.

Frost Tolerance:

This cultivar exhibits a high degree of frost tolerance, withstanding temperatures as low as -7 degrees Celsius. Its resilience makes it suitable for a wide range of Australian climates, including regions prone to frost.

Drought Tolerance:

Yareena is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it an ideal choice for water-wise gardens and areas subject to water restrictions. Its fleshy leaves and robust root system enable it to conserve water effectively, maintaining vigour during extended dry spells.

Flowering Information:

From late spring through summer, Yareena produces an abundance of small, star-like white flowers. These blooms are not only visually appealing but also attract pollinators such as bees. The flowering period extends from October to March, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.

Spacing Requirements:

For optimal ground coverage, it is recommended to plant Yareena at a density of 1 to 2 plants per square metre. This spacing allows for adequate air circulation between plants, reducing the risk of fungal diseases while ensuring a cohesive, dense mat of foliage.

Fertiliser Requirements:

While Yareena is not heavily reliant on fertilisation, applying a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser in spring can support robust growth and flowering. Over-fertilisation should be avoided, as it may lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.

Care and Maintenance:

Yareena is a low-maintenance plant. Pruning every two years helps maintain a tidy appearance and encourages fresh growth. Mulching around the base conserves soil moisture and suppresses weeds; however, it's important to keep mulch away from the stems to prevent rot. This cultivar is relatively pest and disease-free, making it a resilient choice for various garden settings.
