Product Overview

Begonia Black Forest PBR is a striking indoor foliage plant prized for its dramatic, near-black leaves and rich burgundy-red undersides. Its compact habit and deep colouring make it an excellent feature plant for shelves, tabletops and indoor plant collections where strong foliage contrast is desired.

Growth:

Begonia Black Forest PBR has a compact, bushy growth habit, gradually forming a dense display of richly coloured foliage. Its manageable size makes it particularly well suited to indoor containers and smaller spaces.

Light Requirements:

Position in bright, indirect light for the strongest foliage colour and healthy growth. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. It will tolerate moderately lower light, although growth may become slower.

Soil Requirements:

Grow in a high-quality, free-draining indoor potting mix. An open mix with additional perlite or similar drainage material is beneficial, as Begonias prefer moisture without constantly wet roots.

Water Requirements:

Allow the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings without letting it become completely dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as continually wet conditions can lead to root problems.

Humidity and Temperature:

Black Forest appreciates moderate to high humidity and warm indoor conditions. Keep away from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents. Higher humidity can help prevent dry, crispy leaf edges.

Foliage and Flowering:

The standout feature is the exceptionally dark foliage, ranging from deep burgundy and black-green to almost black, with rich reddish tones beneath the leaves. Mature plants may also produce small flowers during the warmer growing season, although Black Forest is primarily grown for its dramatic foliage.

Pot Size and Spacing:

Black Forest performs well in moderately sized containers with good drainage. Repot into the next pot size when the root system begins filling the existing container rather than moving directly into an oversized pot.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced liquid or controlled-release indoor plant fertiliser during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. Reduce feeding during the cooler months.

Care and Maintenance:

Remove old, damaged leaves and spent flower stems as required. Maintain good airflow around the foliage, avoid wetting the leaves excessively and protect the plant from cold conditions. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth.
