Product Overview
Dietes grandiflora, commonly known as Wild Iris or Fortnight Lily, is a robust, rhizomatous perennial native to Southern Africa. It is widely used in landscaping due to its low-maintenance nature and striking white flowers with yellow and mauve markings. This plant is ideal for mass planting, borders, and erosion control in gardens and along waterways.
Growth:
Grows to a height of 1.5 metres and a spread of up to 1 metre. It forms dense clumps of sword-shaped, evergreen leaves that provide year-round structure and texture to garden landscapes.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to part shade. It performs best in sunny locations but can tolerate some shade, which may slightly reduce flowering.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It adapts well to a variety of soil types but requires good drainage to prevent root rot.
Water Requirements:
Moderate water needs. Regular watering is recommended during the establishment phase and dry periods. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and can survive with minimal supplemental watering.
Frost Tolerance:
Tolerant of light frosts and suitable for a wide range of Australian climates. It remains evergreen in mild conditions but may experience some dieback in colder regions.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once established. Regular watering during prolonged dry spells will help maintain its lush appearance and support healthy growth.
Flowering Information:
Produces large, showy white flowers with yellow and mauve markings from late spring to early summer. The flowers last 3-5 days and are followed by large seedpods, which may self-seed if not removed.
Spacing Requirements:
Plant 40 cm apart for masrge, showy white flowers with yellow and mauve markings from late spring to early summer. The flowers lasts planting or as a border. This spacing allows the plant to establish a dense cover and encourages healthy growth.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser once a year to support growth and maintain vibrant flowering. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove spent flower stems and prune back old or damaged foliage to maintain a tidy appearance. Divide clumps every 4-5 years to prevent overcrowding and promote vigorous flowering.
