Product Overview

Ficus lyrata Fiddle Leaf Fig is an indoor plant admired for its large, violin-shaped leaves and bold architectural presence. Native to the rainforests of West Africa, this evergreen tree has become a favourite in Australian homes and offices, adding a touch of tropical elegance to interior spaces.

Growth:

Fiddle Leaf Figs can grow up to 3 metres indoors, but their size can be managed through regular pruning. They have a moderate growth rate and can be shaped into either a bushy shrub or a tall, tree-like form, depending on your preference.

Light Requirements:

These plants thrive in bright, indirect light. While they can tolerate some direct morning sunlight, harsh afternoon sun can scorch their leaves. In Australian homes, placing them near an east- or north-facing window is ideal.

Soil Requirements:

Fiddle Leaf Figs prefer a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and composted bark works well. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Water Requirements:

Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, while underwatering may lead to leaf drop. In warmer Australian climates, more frequent watering may be necessary, whereas in cooler regions, watering can be reduced.

Humidity and Temperature:

Fiddle Leaf Figs prefer temperatures between 18°C and 26°C and benefit from moderate to high humidity levels. In air-conditioned or heated environments, increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly or placing a humidifier nearby. Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts or heating vents.

Foliage and Flowering:

The plant features large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves with prominent veins, creating a bold statement in any room. While flowering is rare indoors, the Fiddle Leaf Fig is primarily grown for its impressive foliage.

Pot Size and Spacing:

Start with a pot that comfortably accommodates the root system, typically 25–30 cm in diameter for young plants. As the plant grows, repot every 1–2 years into a slightly larger container. Ensure adequate spacing if placing multiple plants nearby to allow for proper air circulation.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed the Fiddle Leaf Fig with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to once every 8–10 weeks. Over-fertilising can lead to salt build-up, so it’s advisable to flush the soil with water occasionally.

Care and Maintenance:

Regularly remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to enhance photosynthesis. Prune to maintain the desired shape and remove any dead or damaged leaves. Monitor for common pests like mealybugs and spider mites, treating infestations promptly with appropriate insecticidal solutions. Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth.
