Product Overview
Ficus Elastica Burgundy Rubber Plant is a bold and dramatic indoor plant admired for its broad, dark green leaves with a deep burgundy sheen. Native to Southeast Asia, it’s a favourite in Australian homes and offices, where it adds a touch of sophistication and depth without demanding much care.
Growth:
Indoors, the Burgundy Rubber Plant can eventually grow to around 1.8 to 3 metres tall if given space and time. Its tall, upright stems are lined with large, glossy leaves, creating a modern, sculptural feel. You can easily control its height and shape by trimming back the stems, which also encourages it to fill out and become more compact.
Light Requirements:
This plant enjoys plenty of bright, filtered light but can also adapt to medium-light spots. While it’s fairly forgiving, the richer the light, the deeper the burgundy colour in its leaves. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon, as it can scorch or mark the foliage.
Soil Requirements:
Choose a light, well-aerated potting mix that drains freely. A quality indoor plant blend with added perlite or sand will help keep the roots happy. Good drainage is essential. This plant dislikes sitting in soggy soil and will reward you with healthier, glossier growth if its roots are kept lightly moist but never waterlogged.
Water Requirements:
Water when the top few centimetres of the soil feel dry. It’s better to slightly underwater than to overwater, as Rubber Plants are prone to root rot if left sitting wet. In spring and summer, you might find it needs a little more frequent watering, but in winter, ease back as its growth naturally slows.
Humidity and Temperature:
The Burgundy Rubber Plant thrives in standard indoor temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. While it tolerates typical indoor humidity, it will benefit from the occasional misting, especially if you have the heating or air-conditioning running. Keep it away from chilly draughts or sudden temperature changes to avoid stress.
Foliage and Flowering:
The large, oval leaves are the showpiece here, with their deep green tones and subtle burgundy shine that deepens under good light. It’s rare for this plant to flower indoors and most people grow it purely for its foliage, which adds bold texture and colour to living spaces year-round.
Pot Size and Spacing:
A pot around 25–30 cm wide works well for younger plants, providing enough room for root growth. As the plant matures, consider repotting every couple of years to refresh the soil and give the roots space. If placing several Rubber Plants together, leave enough room so the broad leaves aren’t pressed up against one another.
Fertiliser Requirements:
During the warmer months, feed every 4–6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce or stop feeding over the cooler months when growth slows. Watch for signs of over-fertilising, like salt build-up or leaf browning, and flush the soil occasionally with clean water if needed.
Care and Maintenance:
Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them looking vibrant. Prune occasionally to shape the plant or control its height, and remove any damaged or yellowing leaves as they appear. Check for common indoor pests like mealybugs or spider mites, and treat promptly if needed. Turning the pot every few weeks helps ensure even growth and keeps the plant looking balanced.
