Product Overview

Dodonaea viscosa Green Hop Bush is a versatile evergreen shrub (or small tree) admired for its glossy, narrow green foliage and eye-catching papery seed capsules. It provides year-round structural interest and performs beautifully in coastal, xeric, and low-maintenance gardens.

Growth:

A robust, bushy shrub that generally grows to around 2 to 4 metres tall and 1 to 3 metres wide. With pruning, it can be maintained as a dense shrub, hedging plant, or groundcover.

Light Requirements:

Thrives in full sun to part shade. Full sun encourages the most compact form and healthiest foliage, while some shade can suit sheltered spots.

Soil Requirements:

Adaptable to a variety of soils including sandy, loamy, or light clay as long as they are well-draining. Tolerates poor soils and is often used for erosion control.

Water Requirements:

Water regularly during its establishment phase. Once established, it requires minimal watering and can withstand extended periods of dryness.

Frost Tolerance:

Moderately frost tolerant once established. Performs well in temperate climates, especially when planted in well-drained locations.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought tolerant. Ideal for waterwise gardening, coastal exposure, and arid environments.

Flowering Information:

Produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in spring, followed by 3-4 winged papery seed capsules that transition from green to vibrant red or tan adding seasonal charm and movement.

Spacing Requirements:

Allow approximately 2 to 4 metres between plants to accommodate mature form while maintaining airflow.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Low feeding needs. A light application of compost or slow-release fertiliser in spring is sufficient; heavy feeding is unnecessary.

Care and Maintenance:

Low maintenance. Prune after flowering or as needed to maintain shape or size. Can be trained as a hedge, screen, or allowed to grow naturally. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
