Product Overview

Bean Broad Bean Coles Early Dwarf Seeds

50 grams of seed

Coles Early Dwarf is a reliable, heavy-cropping broad bean that grows to around 1m tall, making it easier to manage than taller varieties. The plants produce medium-sized pods filled with beans that are rich in flavour, and they’re also a great source of vitamin C, folate and fibre. Hardy and productive, they thrive in most soils and are excellent for freezing, ensuring a supply of beans long after harvest.

How To Grow

Prepare double rows 30cm apart, sowing seeds 5cm deep and spacing 25cm between plants. If planting multiple rows, leave 60cm between each set of double rows. Pinch out the tips of the plants when pods reach 7–10cm long to encourage earlier crops and deter blackfly. Broad beans grow best in rich, well-dug soil but will still crop reliably in average conditions. For best results, add a general fertiliser before sowing. Seedlings appear in 10–14 days. Plants may need staking or trellis support once pods begin to form.

When To Plant

Sow from early autumn to late winter. Broad beans prefer cool conditions; in warmer regions, plant in winter for a spring harvest.

Harvest

Ready to pick in 18–20 weeks. Harvest regularly for the best flavour and to keep plants productive.

Flowering

Plants begin flowering around 8–10 weeks after sowing.

Soil Type

Prefers rich, well-dug soil with added compost or fertiliser.

Important Note

Water sparingly in the early growth stages. Once flowers appear, water regularly to avoid blossom drop or poor pod set.
