Product Overview

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia Zanzibar Gem is a hardy and attractive indoor foliage plant valued for its glossy dark green leaves, upright growth and exceptional tolerance of lower light and irregular watering. Its clean architectural form makes it an excellent choice for homes, offices, reception areas and low-maintenance indoor plant displays.

Growth:

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia Zanzibar Gem forms a dense clump of upright stems emerging from thick underground rhizomes. Indoors, it generally grows around 60 to 90cm high and gradually becomes fuller as new shoots emerge from the base.

Light Requirements:

Position in bright, indirect light for the strongest growth, although Zanzibar Gem is highly tolerant of lower light conditions. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Soil Requirements:

Grow in a high-quality, free-draining indoor potting mix. Excellent drainage is essential, as the thick rhizomes store moisture and are vulnerable to rot if the plant is kept constantly wet.

Water Requirements:

Allow the potting mix to dry well between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Zanzibar Gem is very drought tolerant indoors and is far more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering.

Humidity and Temperature:

Zanzibar Gem is well suited to normal household humidity and does not require high humidity. Keep in a warm indoor position protected from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Foliage and Flowering:

The plant produces thick, upright stems lined with smooth, glossy dark green leaflets. New growth emerges a fresh lighter green before deepening in colour as it matures. Small cream to pale green flowers may occasionally appear near the base of mature plants, although flowering indoors is uncommon.

Pot Size and Spacing:

Zanzibar Gem performs well when slightly snug in its pot. Repot only when the rhizomes and roots begin filling the container, usually into the next pot size rather than a much larger pot.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced indoor plant fertiliser during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. Light feeding is sufficient, as Zanzibar Gem is not a heavy feeder.

Care and Maintenance:

Remove yellow or damaged leaves as required and wipe the foliage occasionally to remove dust and maintain its glossy appearance. Avoid frequent watering and never allow the pot to sit permanently in water. Rotate the plant occasionally to encourage balanced growth.
