Product Overview
Agave geminiflora, commonly known as Twin-flowered Agave, is an evergreen succulent with a rounded rosette of slender, dark green leaves edged with fine white threads. Its symmetrical shape adds texture to gravel gardens, succulent plantings and large pots, making it a useful feature for waterwise Australian gardens.
Growth:
Slow growing, typically reaching 80 cm–1 m high and around 1 m wide. Forms a dense, usually solitary rosette of narrow, arching leaves.
Light Requirements:
Grows in full sun to part shade. In hot inland areas, a position with morning sun and protection from intense afternoon heat helps keep the foliage looking its best.
Soil Requirements:
Requires freely draining soil and tolerates sandy, gravelly or loamy conditions. Improve drainage in heavy soils or plant in a raised bed. Use a cactus and succulent potting mix for containers.
Water Requirements:
Water during establishment, allowing the soil to dry between applications. Once established, water occasionally during extended dry periods. Reduce watering in winter and avoid water collecting around the crown.
Frost Tolerance:
Tolerates light frost once established but needs protection from heavy or prolonged frosts. Choose a sheltered position in frost-prone gardens.
Drought Tolerance:
Highly drought tolerant once established. Plants in pots may need more frequent watering than those in the ground, particularly during hot weather.
Flowering Information:
Mature plants may produce a tall flower spike approximately 2.5–3.5 m high, carrying paired yellow to greenish-yellow flowers, generally in winter. Flowering usually occurs only after many years. Each rosette flowers once, then gradually dies.
Spacing Requirements:
Space approximately 1–1.2 m apart to allow room for mature growth. Keep clear of paths and frequently used areas, as the leaf tips are sharp.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Has low fertiliser requirements. If needed, apply a light feed of fertiliser suitable for succulents in spring, following the label directions. Avoid overfeeding.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove dead lower leaves as needed, wearing gloves and avoiding the pointed leaf tips. Keep the crown clear of mulch and debris, and maintain good drainage throughout the year. Protect young plants from severe frost.
