Product Overview

Tomato San Marzano (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a renowned Italian heirloom tomato variety prized for its elongated plum-shaped fruit, dense flesh and rich full-bodied flavour. Famous for producing exceptional sauces and passata, San Marzano tomatoes contain very few seeds and have naturally low acidity, creating a sweet balanced flavour ideal for cooking. This vigorous staking variety produces heavy crops throughout the warmer months and performs beautifully in vegetable gardens, raised beds and large containers with proper support.

How To Grow:

Plant in rich, well drained soil and water consistently to encourage strong vine growth and healthy fruit production. Support plants with sturdy stakes, cages or trellises to carry the heavy clusters of fruit as they mature.

When To Plant:

Spring through summer once frost risk has passed and soil temperatures have warmed.

Harvest:

Ready in 8-10 weeks. Harvest fruit once fully coloured and slightly firm to the touch for the best flavour and texture.

Position:

Full sun in a warm, sheltered location with good airflow.

Soil Type:

Free draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or well aged organic matter.

Growing Tips:

Keep soil evenly moist and avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal issues. Feed regularly during flowering and fruiting for stronger yields and healthy growth. Harvest regularly to encourage continual production throughout the season.

Notes:

Excellent for sauces, passata, soups and slow-cooked dishes thanks to its dense flesh and low moisture content. It also roasts beautifully, developing a deep rich flavour ideal for Mediterranean-inspired cooking. Sold as a single seedling from the Howlong Advanced Vegetable Collection.
