Product Overview
Tomato Ox Heart (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a classic heirloom tomato variety prized for its distinctive heart-shaped fruit, dense fleshy texture and naturally sweet low-acid flavour. Producing medium to large tomatoes with fewer seeds than many standard varieties, Ox Heart is highly valued for its rich old-fashioned taste and meaty consistency. This vigorous mid-season staking variety thrives in sunny garden beds, raised planters and large containers, rewarding growers with generous harvests throughout the warmer months.
How To Grow:
Plant in rich, well drained soil and water consistently to encourage strong vine growth and healthy fruit production. Provide sturdy stakes, cages or trellises to support the heavy fruiting stems as plants mature.
When To Plant:
Spring through summer once frost risk has passed and soil temperatures have warmed.
Harvest:
Ready in 10-12 weeks. Harvest fruit once fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch for the best flavour and texture.
Position:
Full sun in a warm, sheltered location protected from frost.
Soil Type:
Free draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or well aged organic matter.
Growing Tips:
Keep soil evenly moist and avoid overhead watering to help reduce fungal problems. Feed regularly during flowering and fruiting to support strong growth and larger fruit development. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production.
Notes:
Excellent sliced thickly for sandwiches, salads and bruschetta or slow-roasted to intensify its sweet flavour. Its dense juicy flesh makes it ideal for sauces, preserving and hearty tomato dishes. Sold as a single seedling from the Howlong Advanced Vegetable Collection.
