Product Overview

Syzygium Australe Backyard Bliss is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub perfect for creating dense hedges or privacy screens in Australian gardens. This variety of Lilly Pilly is known for its glossy green foliage with coppery-orange new growth, adding year-round interest to landscapes. It also produces fluffy white flowers in summer, followed by attractive pink berries, which are edible.

Growth:

Backyard Bliss grows to a height of 3-4 metres and spreads about 1-2 metres wide, forming a dense and bushy habit that makes it ideal for hedging and screening.

Light Requirements:

It thrives in full sun to part shade, adapting well to various lighting conditions.

Soil Requirements:

This plant performs best in well-drained soils, including sandy and clay soils. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, making it versatile for different garden environments.

Water Requirements:

Once established, Backyard Bliss is drought-tolerant, but it benefits from regular watering during dry periods, especially in the first few years after planting.

Frost Tolerance:

It is frost-tolerant and suitable for temperate climates with light frosts.

Drought Tolerance:

Once established, Backyard Bliss is highly drought-resistant, making it ideal for water-conscious gardeners.

Flowering Information:

In summer, it produces fluffy white flowers, followed by pink berries in autumn. These berries are both decorative and a source of food for birds.

Spacing Requirements:

For a closely clipped hedge, allow approximately 80cm between plants. For an informal hedge or screen, allow approximately 1–1.5 metres. Measure spacing from the centre of one plant to the next, and adjust to suit the supplied plant size and your intended hedge height and width.

Fertiliser Requirements:

A native plant fertiliser applied in spring will encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and improve soil conditions.

Care and Maintenance:

Backyard Bliss is low-maintenance and requires minimal pruning to maintain its shape. Pruning can be done in late winter to encourage bushier growth. This variety is psyllid-resistant, meaning it won’t suffer from the common leaf disfigurement issues that affect some other Lilly Pilly species.
