Product Overview

Strelitzia nicolai Giant Bird of Paradise or White Bird of Paradise, is a bold and exotic indoor plant known for its towering height and massive, banana-like leaves. Native to South Africa, it brings an architectural, tropical feel to Australian interiors, perfect for anyone wanting a big, dramatic feature plant. While it can take some effort to keep happy indoors, with the right care, it becomes a real showstopper.

Growth:

Giant Bird of Paradise grows at a medium to fast rate and can reach up to 3 metres tall and wide indoors. Can get to 9 metres tall and wide outdoors. Its upright, clumping growth habit makes it ideal as a statement piece in large living spaces. Regular trimming helps manage its size and keeps it looking tidy.

Light Requirements:

This plant loves bright, indirect light and can handle some direct sun, especially morning light. Not enough light will slow its growth and reduce the chance of flowering. Ideally, place it near a north- or east-facing window where it can soak up plenty of filtered sunlight.

Soil Requirements:

Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.0). A good blend would include premium indoor plant mix with added perlite or coarse sand to boost drainage and aeration, helping keep roots healthy.

Water Requirements:

Keep the soil evenly moist — water when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to avoid water pooling at the bottom. In the warmer months, you’ll likely need to water more often, while in the cooler seasons, let the soil dry out a little more between drinks.

Humidity and Temperature:

Strelitzia nicolai thrives in moderate to high humidity. If your home is on the dry side, especially with heating or air conditioning, try misting the leaves occasionally, placing a pebble tray nearby, or using a humidifier. It prefers temperatures between 18–27°C and should be kept away from cold draughts or sudden temperature swings.

Foliage and Flowering:

The main attraction is the plant’s huge, paddle-shaped, glossy green leaves, which fan out beautifully. While it’s rare for indoor plants to flower, mature Strelitzia nicolai can sometimes produce striking white and blue flowers that look like a bird in flight — a treat if you can encourage them!

Pot Size and Spacing:

Start with a pot that fits the root ball comfortably, usually 30–40 cm in diameter. As the plant grows, repot it every 1–2 years into a slightly bigger pot to give the roots space. Make sure pots have good drainage. If you’re grouping several together, allow at least 1.5 metres between them to ensure they all get enough airflow.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser made for indoor foliage plants. In autumn and winter, ease off the feeding, as the plant’s growth will naturally slow down.

Care and Maintenance:

Regularly remove old or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking its best. Wipe down the leaves with a damp cloth now and then to clear off dust and help with photosynthesis. Keep an eye out for pests like mealybugs or spider mites and treat any outbreaks promptly using neem oil or insecticidal soap. Repot every couple of years with fresh potting mix to keep the plant thriving.
