Product Overview

Salvia leucantha Mexican Velvet is a striking perennial salvia known for its rich purple velvet-like flowers and long arching stems. Flowering from late summer into autumn, it brings bold colour and texture to garden beds and attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, it’s ideal for cottage gardens, borders, and dry, sunny landscapes.

Growth:

Forms a soft, bushy clump reaching 80-100 cm tall and wide. Long flower spikes emerge above the grey-green foliage, creating a flowing, elegant look.

Light Requirements:

Thrives in full sun. Can tolerate light shade, but best flowering and sturdier growth occur in bright, sunny conditions.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers free-draining soil with moderate fertility. Grows well in sandy, loamy, or gravelly soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground.

Water Requirements:

Low to moderate water needs. Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended dry periods.

Frost Tolerance:

Tolerates light frost. In cooler climates, top growth may die back in winter but typically reshoots in spring.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought-tolerant once established. Ideal for dry gardens, exposed sites, and low-maintenance planting schemes.

Flowering Information:

Produces long, velvety purple flower spikes from late summer through to autumn. Blooms are highly attractive to pollinators and add vibrant late-season colour.

Spacing Requirements:

Plant 60-80 cm apart to allow space for mature spread and airflow. Works beautifully in mass plantings, borders, and mixed perennial beds.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a light dose of balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to excess foliage and reduced flowering.

Care and Maintenance:

Low maintenance. Deadhead to encourage prolonged flowering. Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant and promote bushy regrowth. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil.
