Product Overview

Phormium Yellow Wave is an elegant evergreen perennial known as the New Zealand Flax, prized for its vibrant, arching strap-shaped foliage. Bright yellow central bands contrast with lime-green edges, creating year-round architectural impact in garden settings.

Growth:

Forms a striking clump typically around 90 cm to 1 metre tall, with an equal or slightly wider spread. Its cascading and structured form makes it well suited as a feature plant, in containers, or for bold textural contrast in mixed borders.

Light Requirements:

Thrives in full sun for the best foliage colour and structure. Performs well in light shade, though the bright yellow patterning stands out most in direct light.

Soil Requirements:

Prefers well-drained soil, from loamy to sandy or even light clay types. Tolerates poor soils provided drainage is reliable, avoid overly moist or compacted ground.

Water Requirements:

Water regularly while the plant is establishing. Once mature, it is drought tolerant and performs reliably with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Frost Tolerance:

Moderately frost tolerant once established. Performs well in most temperate climates when planted in well-drained locations and mulched.

Drought Tolerance:

Highly drought tolerant. An ideal choice for waterwise, coastal, or low-maintenance garden schemes.

Flowering Information:

Spontaneously produces tall flower stalks rising above the foliage up to around 2 metres high, with tubular flowers in late spring to summer. Flowering is rare in younger plants but adds additional interest when it occurs.

Spacing Requirements:

Allow approximately 1 to 1.2 metres between plants to accommodate mature spread and ensure airflow.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Low feeding needs. A light spring application of slow-release fertiliser or compost supports tidy growth and foliage vibrancy.

Care and Maintenance:

Low maintenance. Remove dead or damaged leaves as needed in spring. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and control spread. Mulch lightly to retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.
