Product Overview

Magnolia x Soulangeana Alexandrina is a graceful deciduous feature tree prized for its abundant early-spring flowers and attractive spreading form. Large, lightly fragrant, cup-shaped blooms appear along the bare branches before the foliage emerges, displaying soft white interiors beautifully contrasted by rose-pink to purple-pink outer petals. Its impressive floral display, smooth grey bark and lush green summer foliage make it an outstanding choice for lawns, garden beds and courtyard landscapes.

Growth:

This medium-sized tree develops an upright habit when young before forming a broad, rounded canopy. It typically reaches approximately 3.5 metres tall and 2.5 metres wide within its first ten years, eventually growing around 5 to 6 metres tall and 4 to 5 metres wide.

Light Requirements:

Alexandrina performs best in full sun to part shade. A position receiving plenty of sunlight encourages healthy growth and abundant flowering, while protection from hot, drying winds helps preserve its foliage.

Soil Requirements:

Plant in deep, fertile and well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is preferred, although this variety can tolerate mildly alkaline conditions better than some other magnolias.

Water Requirements:

Water deeply and regularly during the establishment period to develop a healthy root system. Once established, maintain consistent soil moisture and provide additional water during hot weather and extended dry periods.

Frost Tolerance:

The tree itself is highly frost-tolerant and well suited to cool and temperate climates. However, developing flowers may be damaged by severe late frosts, so a sheltered planting position is recommended in particularly cold areas.

Drought Tolerance:

Alexandrina has limited to moderate drought tolerance once established. It performs best with reliable moisture and should receive supplemental watering during prolonged dry conditions.

Flowering Information:

Large, lightly fragrant, cup-shaped flowers appear on the bare branches from late winter into early spring. The blooms have white interiors with rose-pink to purple-pink colouring on the outside, creating a striking two-toned display.

Spacing Requirements:

Allow approximately 4 to 5 metres between trees to accommodate the mature canopy and maintain good air circulation. Provide additional space when planting it as an individual feature tree.

Fertiliser Requirements:

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser suitable for flowering trees in early spring. Adding compost or well-rotted organic matter around the root zone will improve soil fertility and encourage healthy growth.

Care and Maintenance:

Alexandrina requires minimal pruning and naturally develops an attractive shape. Remove damaged, crossing or poorly positioned branches after flowering if necessary. Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and keep the shallow roots cool, ensuring the mulch remains clear of the trunk.
