Product Overview
Lagerstroemia Indica x L. Fauriei Biloxi Crepe Myrtle is an elegant deciduous feature tree valued for its long-lasting clusters of pale pink, crinkled flowers, attractive autumn foliage and colourful exfoliating bark. Its upright, vase-shaped canopy provides abundant summer colour, while the green foliage develops yellow, orange and red tones before falling in autumn to reveal smooth, mottled bark in shades of cinnamon, cream, pink and grey.
Growth:
Biloxi is a moderately growing, medium-sized tree that typically reaches approximately 7 to 8 metres tall and 5 metres wide. It develops an upright, vase-shaped canopy and can be grown with either a single trunk or several main stems.
Light Requirements:
Plant in full sun for the strongest growth and most abundant flowering. A position receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight each day will also promote a well-shaped canopy and reduce the likelihood of fungal problems.
Soil Requirements:
Biloxi adapts to various soil types, including loam and clay, but performs best in fertile, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Avoid locations that remain waterlogged for extended periods.
Water Requirements:
Water deeply and regularly during the establishment period to encourage a strong root system. Once established, the tree has moderate water requirements but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged hot or dry conditions.
Frost Tolerance:
This variety has high frost tolerance once established and performs well in temperate climates with cold winters. Young trees may benefit from protection during severe frosts while becoming established.
Drought Tolerance:
Biloxi is highly drought-tolerant once established. Deep watering during extended dry periods will help maintain healthy foliage and support a longer flowering display.
Flowering Information:
Large clusters of pale pink, crinkled flowers are produced continuously from summer into early autumn. The blooms develop on new-season growth and attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow approximately 5 metres between trees to accommodate the mature canopy and maintain good air circulation. Provide additional space when planting Biloxi as an individual feature or shade tree.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in late winter or early spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowering.
Care and Maintenance:
Use light formative pruning while the tree is young to establish a strong, well-spaced framework. Once mature, remove only damaged, crossing or poorly positioned branches and any unwanted suckers during winter. Avoid severe annual lopping, as this can weaken the tree and spoil its natural form. Biloxi has excellent resistance to powdery mildew and requires little ongoing maintenance once established.
