Product Overview
Geranium Pelargonium graveolens Rose is a fragrant, soft-leaved shrub valued for its aromatic foliage and delicate blooms. The leaves carry a rose-like scent which intensifies when brushed or crushed, making it a favourite in herb and sensory gardens.
Growth:
Grows as an upright, branching subshrub, typically achieving heights around 60 cm with a similar spread. It can be pruned to maintain more compact form.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun, but tolerates part shade, flowering and scent are best when light is abundant.
Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-drained soils, such as loamy or sandy mixes, enriched with organic matter. Avoid waterlogged conditions that can lead to root problems.
Water Requirements:
Water regularly while plants establish. Once mature, moderate watering is fine. Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
Frost Tolerance:
Sensitive to heavy frost. Light frost may damage foliage; in colder climates it is often treated as a semi-tender perennial or annual.
Drought Tolerance:
Reasonable drought tolerance when established, though prolonged dry spells may reduce vigour or scent.
Flowering Information:
Bears clusters of small, pale pink to rosy mauve flowers from late winter through summer, with a peak in spring.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow 50-60 cm between plants to allow branching and airflow. Can be kept more compact with pruning.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Low to moderate feeding needs. A slow-release balanced fertiliser in spring is often sufficient.
Care and Maintenance:
Pinch or trim stems regularly to encourage bushier growth and limit legginess. Remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from stems. In colder regions, protect from frost or grow in pots that can be moved inside over winter. Rotate or rejuvenate plants periodically to maintain vitality.
