Product Overview
Cordyline Fruticosa Negra is a striking tropical foliage plant prized for its deep burgundy to near-black leaves and bold upright form. Its rich colouring creates strong contrast in indoor plant displays and makes it an excellent choice for bright interiors, patios and sheltered tropical-style spaces.
Growth:
Cordyline Fruticosa Negra develops as an upright, clumping plant with broad leaves held along slender stems. Indoors, it generally remains compact and manageable, while mature plants grown in ideal conditions can reach around 1 to 2 metres high over time.
Light Requirements:
Position in bright, indirect light for the strongest foliage colour. It will tolerate some lower light, although the deep burgundy colouring may become less intense. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Soil Requirements:
Grow in a high-quality, free-draining indoor potting mix enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is essential to prevent the root zone from remaining constantly wet.
Water Requirements:
Water when the top few centimetres of potting mix begin to dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Humidity and Temperature:
Cordyline Fruticosa Negra prefers warm conditions and moderate to high humidity. Keep away from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents, and protect from frost and prolonged cold conditions.
Foliage and Flowering:
The broad, glossy leaves feature rich burgundy, plum and near-black tones, often with subtle green or reddish colouring through the newer growth. Mature plants may occasionally produce sprays of small pale flowers, although Negra is primarily grown for its dramatic foliage.
Pot Size and Spacing:
Negra performs well in moderately sized containers with good drainage. Repot into the next pot size when the roots begin filling the existing container. Allow enough surrounding space for the broad leaves to develop freely.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced liquid or controlled-release indoor plant fertiliser during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing. Reduce feeding during the cooler months.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove old or damaged lower leaves as required to maintain a tidy appearance. Wipe the foliage occasionally to remove dust and maintain its glossy finish. Rotate the pot periodically for balanced growth and avoid allowing the plant to sit in excess water.
