Cordyline Banksii Electric Flash is a striking evergreen foliage plant valued for its bold striped leaves and compact, clumping growth habit. The long arching foliage features contrasting green and cream tones, creating strong year-round colour and texture in garden beds, modern landscapes, tropical-style gardens and large containers.
Growth:
Cordyline Banksii Electric Flash forms a dense, upright clump with multiple shoots and long, slightly arching leaves. It generally grows to around 1 to 1.5 metres high and approximately 1 metre wide, making it suitable for both feature planting and grouped displays.
Light Requirements:
Plant in full sun to part shade. Good light will help maintain strong foliage colour, although some protection from harsh afternoon sun can be beneficial in very hot climates.
Soil Requirements:
Electric Flash prefers well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is adaptable to a range of garden soils but should not be planted where the root zone remains waterlogged for extended periods.
Water Requirements:
Water regularly during establishment and maintain moderate soil moisture through the warmer months. Once established, allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
Frost Tolerance:
Cordyline Banksii Electric Flash has limited tolerance of heavy frost. In frost-prone areas, plant in a sheltered position and protect young plants from severe cold while they become established.
Drought Tolerance:
Once established, Electric Flash can tolerate short periods of dryness, although regular watering during prolonged hot and dry weather will help maintain healthy foliage and strong colour.
Foliage Information:
The long, arching leaves feature distinctive cream and green striping, giving the plant a bright, variegated appearance throughout the year. The foliage provides strong contrast against darker plants and works particularly well in contemporary and tropical-style gardens.
Spacing Requirements:
Allow approximately 80cm to 1 metre between plants to provide room for the clump to develop naturally.
Fertiliser Requirements:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser during spring to support healthy new growth. Container-grown plants may benefit from additional feeding during the warmer growing season.
Care and Maintenance:
Remove old or damaged leaves as required to maintain a tidy appearance. Electric Flash naturally forms a dense clump and requires little pruning. Mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and improve soil conditions, keeping mulch clear of the base of the plant.
